fairground attraction

always the waltzers made her ill
half aching with the glory of it all
and that smile caught in the flicker
of an eyelid. blink and you'll miss it

he'd said, back against
the whirring steel, arms locked
to sides, was that you
or someone else?

i wasn't here, she said
her mouth an O of
candyfloss and shame.
i know you spun me round

and I remember all or some
of somewhere else. it wasn't here.
i was too far away from you -
spread retching on the grass

while you spun round
with lights and violence
in your hair.
